You can now PAY your UTILITY BILL (sewer) ONLINE!!

Paying your real estate and personal property taxes in Maine is straightforward: locate your bill, check deadlines, and pay via your town office online, by mail, or in person.

Sewer Billing Schedule:

  • The Bingham Sewer Department operates on a fiscal year from February 1 to January 31. 
  • Utilities are billed after every quarter (Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sept, Oct-Dec)
  • Payments are due within 30 days (ie. due by April 30th for the Jan-Mar billing). Interest begins the day following the due date.

 

Step 1: Identify Your Utility Bill

  1. Your annual property tax bill is based primarily on the value of your land, house, and outbuildings. Most home furnishings are exempt from personal property taxes)
  2. The bill is sent by your town or municipal tax collector, who handles local real estate and any taxable personal property

Step 2: Check Your Payment Due Dates

  1. Contact your town tax collector for your specific due dates if you are unsure if your balances are past due.
  2. Paying on time avoids penalties and interest, and some towns may offer installment options.


Step 3: Choose a Payment Method - Bingham accepts payment in the following ways 

  1. Online: Visit your town’s website and click the link above to pay electronically (ACH debit available soon!)
  2. By Mail: Send a check or money order along with your payment stub (or UT account # in the memo) to PO Box 652, Bingham, ME 04920
  3. In Person: Visit the municipal office during business hours to pay by cash, check, or card if accepted


Step 4: Confirm Your Payment

  1. Keep a receipt or confirmation number of your payment for your records. This ensures you have proof that your taxes have been paid.


Step 5: Explore Exemptions or Relief Programs (Optional)

  1. Some Maine homeowners may qualify for property tax exemptions or credits, such as for homestead, veterans or blind residents. Check with your town or the Maine Revenue Services website for eligibility.
  2. By following these steps, you can confidently pay both real estate and any taxable personal property taxes efficiently and on time 

 

Sewer Lien Process

  • Unpaid utilities are liened every 9 months.
    • 30-day Lien Notices on Taxes go out in mid-March.
    • The Lien will be recorded at the Somerset Registry of Deeds in mid-April (30 days from the Lien Notice).
    • The lien will go into automatic foreclosure 18 months from the date it was recorded with the Registry of Deeds.

Sewer Collection

Sewer is billed quarterly. Sewer bills are due 30 days from the billing date (exact date is listed on the bill). January, February, March bill will go out the last of March/first of April and will be due in 30 days, as listed on the bill.

Unpaid sewer bills will have a lien placed against the property. The lien will be subject to automatic foreclosure 18 months from the date it was recorded with the Registry of Deeds.
